Glyphosate – the active ingredient in the broad-spectrum herbicide, Roundup ® – is used almost worldwide as a weedkiller.
Glyphosate can also be detected in honeys and under certain circumstances, if the legal limit value is exceeded, it can be assessed as non-marketable. FoodQS is the only laboratory in the world that analyses glyphosate using the so-called ELISA method. In collaboration with Sension GmbH, we have developed and established the methodology for testing for its presence in honey. The analysis is very sensitive, specific, fast and inexpensive to implement. Since starting our analysis, we have tested more than 6000 honey samples (addendum status: April 2017) for their glyphosate content.
